By car

by carThe region of Hajdúság and its centre Debrecen can be reached on public roads number 4, 33, 35, 47, 48, 471 or on highway M3 and through its direct connection on M35. These roads provide the direct access towards Debrecen. From the capital city visitors can get to Debrecen in two or two and a half hours by car. The neighbouring cities Miskolc and Nyíregyháza – through these cities visitors can travel towards Slovakia and the Ukraine – can be approached on M35 and M3 or M30. Main road no.47 provides a direct road connection towards Romania and Oradea through the border station in Ártánd

Hortobágy is situated 37 km from Debrecen on road no.33. This village can be reached from the other direction that is from the northern central point of Lake Tisza called Tiszafüred by traveling 30 km on road.

Towards Balmazújváros you leave the town on road no. 33 then getting to Látókép Inn you turn north and you go as far as Balmazújváros that is 27 km far from Debrecen.

By coach

By train

The area of Hajdúság can be reached by rail on the main railway line no. 100 Budapest-Szolnok-Debrecen-Nyíregyháza-Záhony. Debrecen is one of the best supplied railway junctions in our country and the area of the county is well covered by the main and side lines. There are 8 railway lines connecting the country seat Debrecen and the towns in the county. Five of these lines provide connections towards the neighbouring countries. The railway lines are often parallel with the traces of the branching public roads.

By train

The main railway line crossing Debrecen and being developed to be a line for train transport at 120 km/hour in a few years provides one of the transport connections between the European Union and Russia as well as the Ukraine through Hungary. From Budapest there is a direct InterCity service arriving in Debrecen in two and a half hours.

If you want to get to Hortobágy by train you reach your destination after an about 40 minute journey departing from Debrecen through Balmazújváros on the railway line Füzesabony-Debrecen.

By air

By airThe airport of Debrecen is situated 5 km far from the city centre along the main road no.47 south of the city. It is owned by the local government of Debrecen and it is operated by Airport Debrecen Kft. owned by the city. The airport has a 2500 m long and 40 m wide concrete runway and 20 m wide taxiways. In addition, it is an international trade airport and customs way of permanent border opening. Having these licences it is of the same category and classification as Ferihegy Airport in Budapest. ILS navigation system provides safe air transport even under poor visibility. It has provided an air traffic control service as an airport of controlled air space since spring 2007. In 2007 its non operating area was developed for trade utilization while in its vicinity the southern industrial area of the town is being formed at the moment. There were 15 charter flights taking off the airport in 2007 and as planned there will also be regular flights this year, similarly to the last two years. Passenger traffic exceeded 45 thousand passengers in 2006. One of the main objectives of the company operating the airport in 2007 was to start developing a cargo base.

Visitors arriving in Budapest by air can reach Debrecen and its area by train or transfer coaches. These means of transport provide reliable and comfortable traveling.
